Do I need a permit to build a deck?
Typically, if the deck is more than 30 inches above grade or attached to the house. In West Valley City, permits come from the Building Inspection Division. In Kearns, they go through the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District. We confirm requirements with your city before work starts.
How deep do deck footings need to go?
Below the frost line. Around the Salt Lake Valley, cities publish a 30-inch frost depth (West Jordan's design criteria are one example), so footings go below that.
When does a deck need a railing?
Under the IRC, guards are required once a walking surface is more than 30 inches above grade, with a 36-inch minimum height.
Does a patio cover need to handle snow?
