Older homes, older decks. Hunter, Granger, Chesterfield and Redwood joined together as West Valley City in 1980, and much of the housing dates from the 1960s through the 1980s. Many backyard decks here have been rebuilt or patched more than once over the decades, so it's common to find newer boards on top of an older frame. That's why we check the structure first.
Winter is hard on decks. Freeze-thaw cycles, snow and ice work on footings, ledgers and fasteners every year. Cities around the valley publish a 30-inch frost depth, and footings that don't reach it tend to move.
Permits. Larger repairs and replacements can need a permit, especially for decks more than 30 inches above grade or attached to the house. In West Valley City, permits come from the Building Inspection Division. We'll confirm what your project needs.
